Mission Statement

Responding to the call of Christ to nurture life, Room At The Inn of the Carolinas operates housing and programs for single, pregnant women and single parents with children suffering from homelessness offering them opportunities to have new lives of healthy, hope-filled independence.

Maternity Home Programs

Room At The Inn of the Carolinas, Inc. operates a licensed maternity home program in North Carolina.

The Nussbaum Maternity Home (NMH)

Located in Greensboro, NC. Fully licensed by NCDHHS, the Nussbaum Maternity Home provides maternity home services to up to six pregnant women with or without previous children.

The McGivney Maternity Home (MMH)

This home was closed January 31, 2013, although we continue the Aftercare program for the women and children who have graduated from the Maternity Home. These services continue for five years after the birth of their babies. Services include: case management/counseling; referrals to community resources; and financial/material assistance. Quarterly peer support group meetings are conducted in the geographical areas served by our programs to allow for clients and staff to meet for fellowship and mutual sharing.

80% of maternity home graduates will transition to permanent housing:

NMH clients: 67% of maternity home graduates transitioned to permanent housing;
MMH clients: 100% of maternity home graduates transitioned to permanent housing.

 

Maternal, Infant and Child Healthcare Program

Room At The Inn of the Carolinas, Inc. operates a Maternal, Infant and Child Healthcare Program for all residents of the maternity home programs. Services include: weekly counseling sessions; transportation to medical appointments; and health education classes.

80% of pre-natal appointments will be kept by each maternity home resident, as documented by weekly appointment record:

NMH clients: 100% of pre-natal appointments were kept;
MMH clients: 100% of pre-natal appointments were kept.

80% of babies born will have healthy birth weights (5.5 pounds or greater) as documented by medical records:

NMH clients: 87% of babies born had birth weights of 5.5 pounds or greater (13 of 15);
MMH clients: 100% of babies born had birth weights of 5.5 pounds or greater (6 of 6).

80% of babies will be born drug free as documented in medical record:

NMH clients: 100% of babies were born drug free;
MMH clients: 100% of babies were born drug free.

80% of babies will have a five minute APGAR score of 8 or more:

NMH clients: 93% of babies born had APGAR scores of 8 or more;
MMH clients: 100% of babies born had APGAR score of 8 or more.

Child Development Programs

Room At The Inn of the Carolinas, Inc, operates two Child Development Programs, which are located at our maternity home facilities. These are:

  • In North Carolina, located within the Nussbaum Maternity Home, provides childcare and child development services to the children of the residents of the maternity home and supported community living housing programs. As of April, 2012 the Child Development Program was moved to the Nurturing Center of Greensboro.
  • In South Carolina, located within the McGivney Maternity Home, provides childcare and child development services to the children of the residents of the maternity home and parenting teen programs. As of June, 2012 childcare was outsourced to The Children's Center.

Emergency Shelter Program

Room At The Inn of the Carolinas, Inc. operates an emergency shelter program in our Amy Elizabeth Disney House located in Greensboro, NC. Two beds are available for homeless, pregnant women who are waiting for admission into the Nussbaum Maternity Home program or who had graduated from the Nussbaum Maternity Home program and are waiting for permanent housing to become available. Emergency shelter services are not available in SC.

19 women and 14 children were sheltered with a total of 626 nights of shelter and 1,878 meals provided. Other services including case management, transportation, and material/financial assistance were also provided to these clients.

Supported Community Living Services (College-based program)

Room At The Inn of the Carolinas, Inc. operates supported community living services for maternity home program graduates who are pursuing an Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at an accredited college or university on a full-time basis. This program integrates aspects of other agency services such as the child development, self sufficiency and aftercare programs. Housing is provided at the following agency facilities: Amy’s House (3 families), the Backyard Ministry of Cherry Street United Methodist Church (1 family), the Samaritan House of the First Church of the Brethren (1 family).

Dixon Self Sufficiency Program

Room At The Inn of the Carolinas, Inc. operates a self sufficiency program for the clients of the maternity home and community supported living programs. This program incorporates case management, transportation, financial/material assistance and life skills education in the following topics: Job Interviewing, Budgeting, Credit Management, Savings, Consumer Credit Counseling, Housekeeping and Tenants’ Rights and Responsibilities. Financial assistance and transportation are provided to maternity home clients who are enrolled in educational/vocational training programs. This program is based at both the Triad and Lowcountry maternity home locations.

Pratt Spiritual and Character Development Program

Room At The Inn of the Carolinas, Inc. operates a completely voluntary program for the clients of the maternity home programs to help them develop self-esteem, positive outlooks, and stable relationships with members of their own faith community. Clients earn points on a weekly basis for participation in activities related to their own spiritual and/or personal growth. Points are earned for a variety of activities including: attendance at their local faith community worship services; involvement in local volunteer activities; improvement in program compliance and attitude; and achievement of personal goals. Points may be converted to financial assistance upon graduation to assist the client with deposits for housing, utilities or for personal needs.

Aftercare Program

Room At The Inn of the Carolinas, Inc. operates an Aftercare program for all maternity home program graduates. Case management, counseling, material and financial assistance are available for all maternity home program graduates for five years after the birth of their children.

Outputs Achieved

Group meetings, supervised by program staff, were conducted in both the Triad area of NC and the Lowcountry area of SC. Maternity home program graduates attended at least one of these meetings during the period.

Support services were provided as requested to program graduates.
